FITTING INSTRUCTION

  • Accessories which are not correctly installed can be dangerous. Read the instructions carefully prior to ordering and installation to make sure this accessory is applicable to your variant of vehicle. Comply with instructions at all times. If in doubt, contact your nearest approved retailer.

M6 Fixing

NOTE
  • If installing the deployable side steps 'WITH' a towbar already installed, then only x2 M6 fixings must be ordered.
  • If installing the deployable side steps 'WITHOUT' a towbar installed, then x4 M6 fixings must be ordered.

Trim Clips

NOTE
  • Trim clips (LR112137) must be ordered as needed if they are damaged during removal of the exterior body trims. The maximum quantity that may be required is x30 for both sides of the vehicle.

Warnings / Cautions / Notes

WARNING
  • You must wear suitable personal protective equipment when cutting / drilling parts.
CAUTION
  • Make sure the electrical wiring harness avoids any sharp edges when installed.
  • Do not loosen any fixings already installed on the deployable side steps prior to installation.
NOTE
  • Place the vehicle on a 4 post ramp before installation.
  • Paid subscription to TOPIX required to view workshop manual links.
Fitting Instruction
1

Disconnect the 12V battery.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '414-00 12V System Disconnect and Connect'.

Remove both loadspace rear trim panels, following the sequence as shown.

Disconnect loadspace floor struts.

  1. Push switch on the loadspace floor to lift into the access position.
  2. Remove x2 fixings that hold the struts in place.

Remove the loadspace floor.

  1. Return the loadspace floor to the closed position.
  2. Remove x6 fixings.

Remove x14 fixings to remove the rear storage compartment.

NOTE
  • The side panels are not removed. Fixings are only removed for access.

Remove x12 fixings from each of the rear side panels of the cargo barrier to expose the hidden screw as described in Step 7.

Remove the loadspace floor stowage compartment covers on both sides of the vehicle.

  1. Open the front loadspace floor stowage compartment cover and remove x6 fixings.
  2. The hidden upper fixing requires the cargo barrier side panel to be moved outwards to gain access.

Remove x15 fixings to remove the front loadspace floor panel.

Remove the front loadspace floor storage tray.

  1. Disconnect the two light connectors before completely removing the tray.
  2. Remove x15 fixings to remove the front loadspace floor storage tray.

Remove the blanking grommet from both sides of the vehicle.

NOTE
  • This step 'ONLY' applies to vehicles installed with rear antenna module.

Remove x2 fixings to slide the antenna module away from the inner rear panel, allowing access to the studs behind.

Towbar

  1. If your vehicle already comes equipped 'WITH' a 'Towbar' proceed to steps 13 to 17 then proceed from step 23.
  2. If your vehicle does 'NOT' have a 'Towbar' then proceed from step 18.

NOTE
  • For the following procedures the electrically deployable towbar module is shown. The non - electrically deployable module differs in appearance, but the essential information is always correct.

Disconnect connectors from the Towbar Control Module (TBM) . Then, remove x2 fixings to remove.

Slide the TBM into deployable side step bracket (I). Make sure the holes are aligned, as illustrated.

Install the TBM with deployable side step bracket.

  1. Install the TBM with deployable side step bracket (I) to the bracket studs and fasten using the x2 fixings removed in step 13. Torque: 5Nm
  2. Reconnect the connectors to the TBM.

Install the RBM(A1).

  1. Install the RBM(A1) on top of the TBM to the deployable side step bracket (I).
  2. Install x2 fixings (A5). Torque: 5Nm

Connect the towbar harness to the RBM(A1).

  1. Locate the connector on the towbar harness as shown.
  2. Then use it to connect the towbar harness to the rightmost connection on the RBM. Then proceed from step 23.

Install module bracket (J) to vehicle floor studs with x2 fixings (A5). Torque: 10Nm

Install the RBM(A1) to the bracket studs and fasten with the x2 fixings (A5). Torque: 5Nm

Remove bottom back panel fixing.

Familiarize yourself with the link lead (A7) prior to installation.

Install link lead (A7).

  1. Connect connector (AB) to the vehicle main body harness.
  2. Connect connector (AC) to the RBM.
  3. Connect ground lead (AA) to the back panel stud and install the back panel fixing removed in step 20 to fasten the ground lead (AA) in place. Torque 10Nm

Familiarize yourself with the deployable side steps harness (A2) prior to installation.

Fasten the deployable side steps harness (A2).

  1. Fasten the harness using one clip (part of the electrical wiring harness) 'white arrow' to the vehicle body stud.
  2. Fasten the harness using x5 cable ties (A10) 'Black arrows' as illustrated.

NOTE
  • This step 'ONLY' applies to vehicles installed with rear antenna module.

Install x2 fixings to fasten the antenna module back to the inner back panel.

Continue to route and fasten the electrical harness (A2) to the left side of the vehicle.

  1. Install the x2 retaining clips (part of the electrical wiring harness) to the vehicle body 'white arrows'.
  2. Feed harness end (AF) though the hole and fasten with grommet (AE).
  3. Route the rest of harness as illustrated and fasten with x7 cable ties (A10) 'black arrows'.

Continue to route and fasten the electrical harness (A2) to the middle of the vehicle.

  1. Route harness as illustrated.
  2. Use the x3 clips (part of the to electrical wiring harness) to fasten the harness to the rear cross member.

Continue to route and fasten the electrical harness (A2) to the right side of the vehicle.

  1. Feed harness end (AH) though the hole and fasten with grommet (AG).
  2. Route the rest of harness as illustrated and fasten with x5 cable ties (A10) 'black arrows'.

Locate the junction box cover in the rear right of the vehicle.

  1. Remove the junction box cover.
  2. Locate fuse location F39 on the junction box and install fuse (A6).
  3. Install junction box cover.

CAUTION
  • Make sure to use the front and rear subframe jacking points.
NOTE
  • Make sure the ramp legs are positioned so they do not obstruct the deployable side step installation locations.

Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 4 post lift. The front and rear subframe jacking points must be used. Do not use the sill jacking points.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '100-02 Jacking and Lifting'.

CAUTION
  • Clips may be damaged during removal. Replace clips if they are damaged.
NOTE
  • Make sure that the x4 clips remain on the front fender moulding. Replace clips as required.
  • Remove the front mudflaps if installed to the vehicle.

Remove front fender mountings on both sides of the vehicle. Make sure care is taken when removing part, fragile retention tabs

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08 Exterior Trim and Ornamentation'.

CAUTION
  • Clips may be damaged during removal. Replace clips if they are damaged.

Remove rocker panel on both sides of the vehicle.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08 Exterior Trim and Ornamentation'.

Remove transmission shield and side undershields.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels'.

Modify the left side rocker panel.

  1. Identify the cut guide lines on the left side rocker panel. Paint over them to make them clearer.
  2. Drill holes at the illustrated locations (1).
  3. Use suitable tooling to cut the illustrated sections (2) from the left side rocker panel. Then discard the removed sections.

Modify the right side rocker panel.

  1. Identify the cut guide lines on the left side rocker panel. Paint over them to make them clearer.
  2. Drill holes at the illustrated locations (1).
  3. Use suitable tooling to cut the illustrated sections (2) from the right side rocker panel. Then discard the removed sections.

NOTE
  • Left side undershield shown, right side similar. Undershield illustrated in correct installation position on vehicle and viewed from above.

Modify both left and right side undershields.

  1. Identify the cut guide line on the undershield as illustrated. Paint over it to make it clearer.
  2. Use suitable tooling to cut the illustrated sections from the undershield. Discard the removed section.

NOTE
  • The illustration shows the left side undershield in its correct installation position on the vehicle, viewed from above. The right side is similar.

Offer up parts (B1) and (B2).

  1. Offer up parts (B1) against the modified left side undershield as illustrated, and part (B2) against the modified right side undershield.
  2. The inset illustration shows a view from below, demonstrating how parts are located above the undershield and the final location of fixings.
  3. Use the guide holes provided on the part (B1) and (B2) to carefully mark the undershields.
  4. Remove parts (B1) and (B2).

  • The illustration shows the left side undershield, viewed from above. The right side is similar.

Drill holes in undershields.

  1. Drill holes at the marked locations on both left and right modified undershields using a 5mm drill bit.

  • The illustration shows the left side undershield in its correct installation position on the vehicle, viewed from above. The right side is similar.

Install parts (B1) and (B2).

  1. Install part (B1) to the left modified side undershield using x12 rivets (B10) and the x12 washers (B9).
  2. Repeat this process for the right modified side undershield, installing part (B2).

CAUTION
  • The foil heatshield is riveted to the core material transmission undershield. Before proceeding, drill out the existing rivets

Modify the transmission undershield.

  1. Identify the cut guide lines on the undershield as illustrated. Paint over the cut guide lines to make them clearer.
  2. Use suitable tooling to carefully cut the illustrated sections from the undershield. Discard the removed sections.

Drill the transmission undershield extensions.

  1. Locate the transmission undershield extension parts (B3) and (B4) against the transmission undershield as illustrated.
  2. Use the guide holes provided on the transmission undershield extensions to carefully mark the transmission undershield.
  3. Remove both transmission undershield extensions, then drill holes at the marked locations on the transmission undershield using a 5mm drill bit.

NOTE
  • The foil heatshield is installed again using the deployable side step plastic undershield rivet.

Install transmission undershield extensions.

  1. Using x12 rivets (B10) and x12 washers (B9), install both transmission undershield extension parts to the modified transmission undershield as illustrated.
  2. The foil heatshield is installed again using the deployable side step plastic undershield rivet.

CAUTION
  • Diesel vehicles 'ONLY'.

Remove and discard the transmission support bar fixing, as illustrated, on both sides of the vehicle.

WARNING
  • This step requires the aid of another technician.
CAUTION
  • Do not remove the deployable side step boards from the brackets.
  • Do not remove the geometry bar on the deployable side step at this stage.

Install the deployable side step (A) using x4 fixings (B) on both sides of the vehicle. However, do not fully tighten the fixings.

CAUTION
  • Diesel vehicles 'ONLY'.

Install, but do not fully tighten fixing (C) on both sides of the vehicle.

CAUTION
  • Non-diesel vehicles 'ONLY'.

Install spacer (F) and fasten with fixing (C), but do not fully tighten, on both sides of the vehicle.

  • Complete step on left side of vehicle 'ONLY'.

Place the x2 nut plates (D) as illustrated.

Install, but do not fully tighten, fixings (C) and the x2 washers (E) into the x2 nut plates (D).

Fully tighten the x4 fixings (B) on both sides of the vehicle in the following sequence:

  1. First, tighten the indicated fixing. Torque: 29Nm
  2. Next, tighten the remaining x3 fixings. Torque: 29Nm

Fully tighten the x2 fixings (C). Torque: 29Nm

Fully tighten the fixing (C) on both sides of the vehicle. Torque: 29Nm

Fully tighten the fixing (G). Torque: 65Nm

Remove the x2 fixings and the geometry bar on both side steps.

Use the arrowed clip and the retaining clip (A9) to fasten the wiring harness (A2) to the right side of the vehicle and the body harness, as illustrated.

Use the arrowed clip and the retaining clips (A8) and (A9) to fasten the wiring harness (A2) to the left side of the vehicle and the body harness, as illustrated.

Familiarize yourself with harness (A3) and (A4) prior to installation.

  • The harness (A3) is installed to the left side of the vehicle and features yellow-colored tape for identification.
  • The harness (A4) is installed to the right side of the vehicle features blue-colored tape for identification.

  • Make sure that the correct link lead is installed to each side of the vehicle. The link leads are color coded.

For the left side of the vehicle connect the electrical wiring harness (A3) to the wiring harness (A2) with connector (AF) and to the deployable side step motor with connector (AI).

  • Make sure that the correct link lead is installed to each side of the vehicle. The link leads are color coded.

Connect the electrical wiring harness (A4) to the wiring harness (A2) with connector (AH) and to the deployable side step motor with connector (AJ).

Lower vehicle on ramp.

Connect the 12V battery.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '414-00 12V System Disconnect and Connect'.

  • Make sure step 1 is successfully completed before proceeding to step 2.

Use the JLR approved diagnostic equipment to navigate to 'Diagnostics' section and follow the steps below.

  1. Within Vehicle Applications – Click ‘RUN’ for ‘Add/Remove Deployable Side Steps’, then select ADD.
  2. Within Module Programing – Click ‘RUN’ for ‘RBM - Software - Replace Module’.
  3. To enable the changes on the vehicle
    Ignition off
    Close all doors
    Lock the vehicle
    Wait 5 minutes
    To confirm changes
    Unlock the vehicle
    Reset Infotainment Screen (Refer to 'Touchscreen' settings in Owners handbook for detailed procedure.)
    Confirm 'Side - Step' tile is present on the Touchscreen

Fully deploy the deployable side steps.

  • Make sure the deployable side steps are operating correctly when opening and closing the doors on both sides of the vehicle.

CAUTION
  • Make sure the vehicle ignition is off.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery terminal before disconnecting the harness from the motor. Complete task while the steps are still in the fully deployed position.

Fully disconnect and remove the electrical wiring harness (A3) and (A4) as this will now be installed to the undershields.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '414-00 12V System Disconnect and Connect'.

Raise vehicle on ramp.

  • Make sure that the correct link lead is installed.

Install the electrical wiring harness (A3) by clamping it to the left side undershield as illustrated. Repeat step for the right side undershield using the electrical wiring harness (A4).

  • Make sure the harness is connected to the motor to avoid the connector and / or harness being damaged.
NOTE
  • This step requires the aid of another technician.

Position the modified left undershield as illustrated and connect the electrical wiring harness (A3).

  1. Connect the electrical wiring harness (A3) to the wiring harness (A2) and the deployable side step motor.
  2. Use clip (A9) to fasten the harness (A3) to the deployable side step motor cable.
  3. Install the modified left undershield. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels'.

  • Make sure the harness is connected to the motor to avoid the connector and / or harness being damaged.
NOTE
  • This step requires the aid of another technician.

Position the modified right undershield as illustrated and connect the electrical wiring harness (A4).

  1. Connect the electrical wiring harness (A4) to the wiring harness (A2) and the deployable side step motor.
  2. Use clip (A9) to fasten the harness (A4) to the deployable side step motor cable.
  3. Install the modified right undershield. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels'.
  4. Install the transmission undershield. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels'.

  • Make sure side steps are deployed before you can install fixings (B6).

Install x7 fixings (B6).

Install the rocker panel on both sides of the vehicle.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08 Exterior Trim and Ornamentation'.

Install front fender mountings on both sides of the vehicle.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08 Exterior Trim and Ornamentation'.

Lower vehicle on ramp.

Install x15 fixings and x2 lamps to install the front loadspace floor storage tray. Torque: 3.5Nm

Remove the loadspace floor stowage compartment covers on both sides of the vehicle.

  1. Open the front loadspace floor stowage compartment cover and remove x6 fixings.
  2. The hidden upper fixing requires the cargo barrier side panel to be moved outwards to gain access.

Install the front loadspace floor panel with x15 fixings. Torque: 3.5Nm

Install x12 fixings back to the cargo barrier rear side panels. Torque: 6Nm

Install x14 fixings to install the rear stowage compartment. Torque: 3.5Nm

Install the loadspace floor with x6 fixings. Torque: 4Nm

Install x2 struts to the loadspace floor.

  1. Open the loadspace floor.
  2. Install x2 fixings to fasten the struts in position.
  3. Close the loadspace floor.

Install both loadspace rear trim panels, following the sequence as shown.

Connect the 12V battery. Make sure the deployable side steps are operating correctly and are activated for the customer handover.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '414-00 12V System Disconnect and Connect'.
