FITTING INSTRUCTION

WARNING
  • Accessories which are not correctly installed can be dangerous.
  • Before ordering and installing the accessory, you must read all the instructions. The correct accessory / part must be ordered for you variant of the vehicle.
  • You must follow all instructions. If in doubt, contact your nearest approved retailer.
NOTE
  • Older and newer edition part numbers may be present for the same kit. Latest edition is recommenced, but all are acceptable to order and install, depending on stock levels.

  • The table below are a breakdown of the accessory kit contents. They include individual parts, quantities and if required replacement service part numbers for specific parts.
  • When ordering the 'Expedition Roof Rack,' some kits may not include washers (J). If this is the case, then x12 washers must be ordered (see table below for 'Replacement Service Part Numbers').

Installation and Compatibility

WARNING
  • Seek assistance from two other people when installing the heavy 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
NOTE
  • The vehicle must be equipped with 'Roof Rails' to install the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
  • If installing a 'Deployable Roof Ladder', install the 'Expedition Roof Rack' up to STEP 10 on these instructions, then fully install the ladder before continuing with the roof rack installation.

Speed and Driving Restrictions

WARNING
  • The vehicle's handling will change with a roof load. Adjust driving techniques, especially when braking and cornering.
  • Negotiate sharp bends with caution and moderate cornering speeds.
  • Avoid harsh acceleration and braking.
  • Do not exceed 130 km/h (80 mph) when the 'Expedition Roof Rack' is installed.

Usage Restrictions and Potential Issues

CAUTION
  • Do not use automated vehicle washes with the 'Expedition Roof Rack' installed.
  • The roof opening panel must not be used if loads protrude beneath the roof rack crossbars.
  • Objects placed above the roof-mounted satellite antenna may interfere with navigation and satellite radio systems.
  • Obey local regulations regarding roof-mounted cargo.

Weight and Height Limits

WARNING
  • The load must be evenly distributed over the area of the 'Expedition Roof Rack,' as illustrated below. The center of gravity of the load must be kept as low as possible.
  • The maximum load that can be placed on the 'Expedition Roof Rack' depends on the type of tire.
  • For all season tires the maximum load that can be placed on the expedition roof rack is 68kg.
  • For all terrain tires the maximum load that can be placed on the expedition roof rack is 129kg.
  • The maximum load that can be placed on the rear of the 'Expedition Roof Rack,' as illustrated below in the bottom graphic, is 20 kg or 44 lbs.
  • Do not overload the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
  • Do not exceed the recommended gross vehicle weight (GVW).
  • Do not load cargo outside the width of the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
  • Loads that overhang the ends of the Expedition Roof Rack must conform to all relevant local laws and bylaws.
  • Increased Height - Be aware of the extra vehicle height.
NOTE
  • The weight of the 'Expedition Roof Rack' is 32 kg or 70 lbs.

Securing Cargo

WARNING
  • Seek the assistance of another person when loading and unloading heavy or awkward items to and from the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
  • Do not tie straps or place heavy loads onto the front of the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
  • Do not use elastic straps (bungees) to fasten loads onto the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.
  • All straps used must be maintained in good working order.
  • Make sure that all cargo are securely installed to the 'Expedition Roof Rack.' Inspect the security of the load's attachment to the 'Expedition Roof Rack' regularly during the trip.
  • Items that may produce a significant lifting force (for example surfboards) must be mounted in such a way as to minimize this force.
  • Other specialized roof accessories for securing loads (for example, cycle carriers or ski carriers) must be used instead of the 'Expedition Roof Rack'.

Maintenance and Inspections

WARNING
  • It is very important to maintain the equipment in good working order.
  • Inspect the torque of all 'Expedition Roof Rack' fixings after covering 60 km (40 miles) and 250 km (150 miles). Then, inspect them every 1000 km (600 miles) thereafter.
NOTE
  • Keep these instructions in a safe place for future reference.
  • Removing the 'Expedition Roof Rack' when not in use will improve fuel economy.
Fitting Instruction
NOTE
  • These instructions use Defender 110 illustrations. Defender 130 is similar.

Vehicle inspection.

  • Inspect to see if your vehicle is equipped with a 'Deployable Roof Ladder'. If so this must be removed before starting these instructions.
  • The 'Deployable Roof Ladder' top trim cover could be damaged when removed.
  • See 'Deployable Roof Ladder' instructions for ordering a new top trim cover if required.

Install clamp plates (G).

  • Align and insert the clamp plates into the large cut outs on the roof rail at the x6 locations.

Position clamp plates (G).

  1. Slide the front and middle clamp plates (G) toward the front of the vehicle along the roof rails, approximately to the location shown.
  2. Slide the rear clamp plates (G) toward the rear of the vehicle along the roof rails, approximately to the location shown.

CAUTION
  • The rack supports must be installed at the correct location on the vehicle as indicated by the label in the graphic.

Identify the label on the rack supports (F) to find the location identifier.

  • 'FL' = Front Left
  • 'FR' = Front Right
  • 'ML' = Middle Left
  • 'MR' = Middle Right
  • 'RR' = Rear Right
  • 'RL' = Rear Left

Install x6 rack supports (F) to the x6 clamp plates.

  1. Place the rack supports onto the clamp plates. Make sure the orientation is correct.
  2. Slide the front and middle rack supports forward until the stoppers on the underneath of the support do not allow further movement.
  3. Slide the rear rack supports backward until the stoppers on the underneath of the support do not allow further movement.

Inspection.

  • Note the bracket stoppers must be up against the roof rail sections.

Fasten the x6 rack supports (F).

  • Install, but do not fully tighten fixings (C) and washers (J) to install the x6 rack supports to the x6 clamp plates.

Inspect the Expedition Roof Rack (A).

  • Make sure all fixings shown are fully tightened. Torque: 12Nm

CAUTION
  • Versatile roof rack finishers must be cut to a length so they fill the entire length of the slot in each cross bar. The finisher is to install under the longitudinal section of the roof rack on both sides. If gaps remain, there will be noise generated as the vehicle is being driven.
NOTE
  • Finisher part number replacement if required: LR171762.

Install the versatile roof rack finishers (I).

  1. Starting from the front cut the first x7 versatile roof rack finishers to the required length and Install into each cross bar by pushing down along the length of the finisher.
  2. The back versatile roof rack finisher must be measured and cut into two pieces. Then Install into each space by pushing down along the length of the finisher.

WARNING
  • This step requires x3 people to complete. Position x1 person on each side of the vehicle and x1 person at the rear of the vehicle.
CAUTION
  • Take care when lifting the expedition roof rack onto the vehicle to avoid damage to the vehicle paintwork and exterior finishers.

Place the expedition roof rack (A) into position.

  1. Offer up the expedition roof rack over the vehicle and place onto the rack supports (F).
  2. Make sure the fixing holes in the expedition roof rack align with the matching holes in the rack supports. Adjust the rack supports if required.
  3. Then remove the expedition roof rack when everything is aligned.

NOTE
  • If you are also installing the 'Deployable Roof Ladder', it must be fully installed before proceeding with the remaining 'Expedition Roof Rack' installation steps.

Fasten the x6 rack supports.

  • Fully tighten fixings (C). Torque: 30Nm

WARNING
  • This step requires x3 people to complete. Position x1 person on each side of the vehicle and x1 person at the rear of the vehicle.
CAUTION
  • Take care when lifting the 'Expedition Roof Rack' onto the vehicle to avoid damage to the vehicle paintwork and exterior finishers.

Place the expedition roof rack (A) into position.

  • Offer up, and align the expedition roof rack back onto the rack supports (F).

CAUTION
  • Use Duct tape and not Masking tape.

Protect paint work.

  • Apply duct tape to the top longitudinal part of the frame on areas above each fixing bracket to avoid scratches to the roof rack.

Install the expedition roof rack to the rack supports.

  1. Slide spacer plate (E) into the gap in the rack support.
  2. Hand tighten fixings (B) so they go through the spacer (D), the rail and the rack support and finally engage into the spacer (E).
  3. When happy with alignment, tighten fixings (B). Torque: 32Nm
  4. Remove any duck tape.

Install the x2 expedition roof rack caps (H) to the expedition roof rack.

Inspect the expedition roof rack is installed correctly.
