NOTE
  • Depending on stock levels, kit VPLEP0490 is recommended. However, the older kit VPLEP0427 is still acceptable to order and install.
  • In kit VPLEP0427, 2 fixings (108) and 2 fixings (109) must be discarded as these are replaced by stainless steel fixings (113) and (114).

  • Suitable personal protective equipment must be worn when drilling or cutting parts.
CAUTION
  • Installation of winch mounting kit to Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) vehicles will require the sounder link harness which is only available as part of Remote Electric Winch Kit - VPLEP0426.
  • Inspect the function of all lights/parking sensors at the end of the installation.
NOTE
  • The Winch Mounting Kit is installed in conjunction with the Remote Control Electric Winch - VPLEP0426, which has its own installation instructions (see Step 54).

WARNING
  • The vehicle must be securely positioned on ramps and stable before proceeding.

Place the vehicle on a ramp. Do this first, as the 12V battery will be disconnected during these instructions.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '100-02 Jacking and Lifting / Jacking and Lifting'.

Disconnect the 12V battery.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '414-00 Battery and Charging System - General Information / 12V System Disconnect and Connect'.

CAUTION
  • The wheel and tire assembly will be heavy.
  • The locking wheel nuts can only be removed and installed by using the special adapter provided in the vehicle tool kit, located under the loadspace in the rear of the vehicle.
  • Using power tools may result in the damage to the wheel nuts. Wheel nuts must be removed and installed using hand tools only.

Remove both front wheels.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '204-04 Wheels and Tires / Wheel and Tire'.

CAUTION
  • This step is only applicable for vehicles equipped with coil suspension.

If the remote-control electric winch is being installed in conjunction with the winch mounting kit, replace the 'front coil springs' with the correct 'heavy-duty front coil springs kit' listed below. If not, proceed to the next step.

  • 6 Cyl 90 L8BM-5B302-AA - VPLEI0604.

Remove the radiator grille.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08 Exterior Trim and Ornamentation / Radiator Grille'.

NOTE
  • Do not remove fog lamps if present.
  • Only remove the 2 central parking sensors.

Remove the front bumper and strip bumper down completely with the exception of the parts covered in the notes above.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-19 Bumpers / Front Bumper - Core Vehicle'.

NOTE
  • This step is only applicable to vehicles with front proximity camera.

Remove the front proximity camera from the camera housing.

  1. Remove the front proximity camera from the camera housing. Retain the front proximity camera for installation later.
  2. Discard the camera housing.

Remove 8 fixings to remove the grille from the lower part of the bumper.

NOTE
  • If your vehicle is a PHEV then the 'Exterior Synthetic Sounder' and bracket must also be removed.

Remove hood latch panel assembly.

  1. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels / Hood Latch Panel'.
  2. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '415-01 Information and Entertainment System / Exterior Synthetic Sounder'.

NOTE
  • The standard cooling module protector assembly is not reinstalled back to the vehicle after the winch is installed. Only the cooling module protector assembly from the front undershield kits 'VPLEP0436' or 'VPLLE0034' is installed back to the vehicle in 'Step 50'.

Remove the front armature, both braking cooling air ducts and the cooling module protector assembly.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-19 Bumpers / Front Armature'.

Remove and discard 4 clips as illustrated.

NOTE
  • This step is only applicable for vehicles with active grille.

Tape up the lower active vane connector to avoid dirt getting into the connector. Then tape it to the existing harness to avoid it from rattling around.

Remove the radiator air vent.

  • Release 6 clips and remove the radiator air vent from the vehicle.

NOTE
  • Measurements shown in the following illustrations are an approximation and a slight difference in millimeters is an acceptable measurement.

Modify parts shown in the following steps.

CAUTION
  • 'Steps 15 to 20' are only applicable to PHEV vehicles. Skip to 'Step 21' if you vehicle is a non-PHEV vehicle.

Separate the upper air deflector from its shroud.

  • Remove 4 fixings.

Modify the upper air deflector. Stage 1 of 3

  • Remove 3 slats from the grille and discard.

Modify the upper air deflector. Stage 2 of 3

  1. Use an appropriate tool to cut where illustrated along the dashed lines and discard the removed blue section.
  2. File down any sharpe edges.

Modify the upper air deflector. Stage 3 of 3

  1. Use a suitable tool to measure and cut where illustrated along the dashed lines and discard the removed blue section.
  2. File down any sharpe edges.

Modify the upper air deflector shroud.

  1. Use a suitable tool to measure and cut where illustrated along the dashed lines and discard the removed blue section.
  2. File down any sharpe edges.

Install the modified upper air deflector back to the modified shroud.

  • Install 4 fixings. Torque 2.8Nm

  • Only cut and discard the sections of rubber seal as illustrated.

  • Using a suitable tool, measure and cut the illustrated sections along the dashed lines. Discard the removed blue sections.

Using a suitable tool, measure and cut the illustrated sections along the dashed lines from the front brake air vents. Discard the removed blue parts.

  • Drill a hole using a 7mm drill bit as illustrated on both of the front brake air vents.

Modify the radiator grille. Stage 1 of 3

  • Using a suitable tool, measure and cut the illustrated section along the dashed lines from the front bumper upper cover. Discard the removed blue section.

Modify the radiator grille. Stage 2 of 3

  • Using a suitable tool, measure and cut the illustrated section along the dashed lines from the front bumper upper cover. Discard the removed blue section.
  • 12 mm drill bit

  • This step is only applicable for vehicles installed with front proximity camera.

Modify the radiator grille. Stage 3 of 3

  • Using a suitable tool, measure and cut the illustrated section along the dashed lines from the front bumper upper cover. Discard the removed blue section.

  • Drill a 25 mm hole in the location shown in the right inset.

  • This step must not be completed if your vehicle is a Defender X variant, as the material is difficult to cut and can leave razor sharp edges. In this instance, part 'VPLEB0443' must be ordered, as it comes pre-cut.
CAUTION
  • There are multiple cut guide lines on the front bumper lower cover. There is a risk of irreversible damage to the part if the correct cut guide lines are not followed.

Modify the front bumper. Stage 1 of 2

  • Identify and mark the correct cut guide lines on the back of the front bumper.

WARNING
  • This step must not be completed on Defender X parts, as the material is difficult to cut and can leave razor sharp edges. In this instance, part 'VPLEB0443' must be ordered, as it comes pre-cut.
CAUTION
  • If the vehicle has a satin wrap then this must be removed from the front bumper lower cover.

Modify the front bumper. Stage 2 of 2

  1. Using a suitable tool, cut the illustrated section along the dashed lines from the front bumper lower cover. Discard the removed blue section.
  2. Use a file to tidy up any rough edges.

WARNING
  • If your vehicle is a Defender X variant then order part 'LR129440' before carrying out this step, as the original part is difficult to cut and can leave razor sharp edges.

Using a suitable tool cut the illustrated section along the dashed lines from the lower bumper grille and keep the part labeled (S1). Discard the removed blue section.

NOTE
  • For vehicles installed with pusher fan, unplug and route harness from the fan inside the venting. The harness will be fastened to the winch cradle when installed.

Install the radiator air vent back to the vehicle using 6 retaining clips.

Install the winch rope anchor (16) to the winch mounting cradle (2) using 2 fixings (108) and (109). Torque: 30Nm

Install the winch guide plate (1) to the winch mounting cradle (2) using 2 fixings (113) and (114). Torque: 22Nm

Install the grille (15) to the winch mounting cradle (2) using 3 fixings (110) and (111). Torque: 10Nm

NOTE
  • This step is only required if your vehicle does not have the front undershield kits VPLEP0436 or VPLLE0034 installed to your vehicle.

Install the front brake cooling vent brackets (10) and (11) to the winch mounting cradle brackets (3) and (4).

  • Install using 2 fixings (110) and (111). Torque: 10Nm

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the winch mounting cradle brackets (3) to the right side of the vehicle and mounting cradle bracket (4) to the left side.

  • Install, but do not fully tighten 2 fixings (109) and the 2 fixings retained during the front armature removal in 'Step 10'.

Crush can identification and orientation.

  • Identify which crush can is for the left and right of the vehicle before installation. The larger 35mm measurement is to always be outer facing.

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the new crush cans (1) and (2).

  • Install, but do not fully tighten 2 fixings (104) with washers (103).

WARNING
  • Brackets (5) are manufactured with an angle. As shown in the illustration LH and RH. Wrong positioning will result the affect the winch cradle strength.

Noting the correct orientation position the brackets (5) as illustrated on both side of the vehicle before installation.

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the outside 2 fixings (100) with washers (103) and 2 fixings (102) to install the crush can and brackets. Do not fully tighten the fixings at this stage.

WARNING
  • The aid of a second technician is necessary to move heavy components.
NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the winch cradle (2).

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten 4 fixings (105) into the crush can.
  2. Install, but do not fully tighten 3 fixings (101) and (102) into the winch mounting cradle bracket.

NOTE
  • This step is applicable only to vehicles installed with front pusher fan.

Attach pusher fan vehicle harness to the highlighted clamp points on the crush can and the rear of the winch cradle.

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Raise the cradle and crush cans against the square support brackets and fully tighten the 4 fixings as illustrated.

  1. Tighten 2 fixings (104). Torque: 55Nm
  2. Tighten 2 fixings (100). Torque: 110Nm

Move the winch mounting cradle to the furthest forward position.

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Fully tighten the fixings.

  1. Tighten 3 fixings (102). Torque: 55Nm
  2. Tighten 4 fixings (105). Torque: 55Nm

WARNING
  • Heavy component. The aid of another technician is required.
CAUTION
  • This step is only applicable for vehicles equipped with the 'Front Undershield - VPLEP0436 or VPLLE0034' that was removed in 'Step 10'.

Install the cooling module protector assembly and the RH cradle leg (12) and the LH cradle leg (12).

  1. Install the spacer block(9) on both ends of the cooling module protector assembly using fixings (106) and (109). Torque: 30Nm
  2. Install, but do not fully tighten fixing (101) with spacer (14) to both lower legs.
  3. Install the upper fixings of both legs with 2 fixings (108) and (109). Torque: 30Nm

CAUTION
  • This step is only applicable for vehicles equipped without the 'Front Undershield - VPLEP0436 or VPLLE0034'.

Install the RH cradle leg (12) and the LH cradle leg (13).

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten 2 fixings (101) with 2 spacers (14) to both lower legs.
  2. Install the upper fixings of both legs with 2 fixings (108) and (109). Torque: 30Nm

Tighten 2 fixings (101). Torque: 110Nm

Tighten 4 original fixings. Torque: 110Nm

Install the remote control electric winch at this point if required.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '102-05 Towing / Remote Control Electric Winch'.

Install the lower winch air vent (17).

  1. Install the lower winch air vent to the winch cradle with 2 fixings (110) at each end. Torque: 4Nm
  2. Install the lower winch air vent to the cradle legs with 4 fixings (110) and (111). Torque: 4Nm

  • The lip seals must be straight with no distortion on the lip edges.

Install the lip seal (7) to the upper and the lower air vents (6) and (17).

  • Trim the lip seal as required and install to both the upper and lower air vents as illustrated.

Install the modified hood latch panel section shown.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels / Hood Latch Panel'.

NOTE
  • This step applies only to PHEV vehicles.

Install the synthetic sounder bracket (8).

  1. Install the synthetic sounder bracket to the hood latch panel with 2 original fixings (black arrow). Torque: 10Nm
  2. Install the synthetic sounder to the new synthetic sounder bracket with 2 original fixings (white arrow). Torque: 10Nm
  3. Using the PHEV link lead (S) from the 'Remote Control Electric Winch Kit' - VPLEP0426. Connect the synthetic sounder to the original synthetic sounder connector.

Install the rest of the modified hood latch panel.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-02 Front End Body Panels / Hood Latch Panel'.

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the modified front brake cooling vent to the vehicle with the original clips.

Install the strengthening bar (19). Stage 1 of 2

  1. Trim and install the safe edge (18) to the lower bumper grille part (S1) cut out in 'Step 34'.
  2. Using the strengthening bar (19) as a guide, mark 5 locations onto the lower bumper grille part (S1). Then remove the strengthening bar.
  3. Drill the 5 marked holes using a 4mm drill bit at the indicated locations on the lower bumper grille part (S1). Countersink the drilled holes on the opposite side of the grille (S1).

Install the strengthening bar (19). Stage 2 of 2

  1. Place the strengthening bar on the front bumper.
  2. Install the lower bumper grille (S1) over the strengthening bar and clip into place on the front bumper.
  3. Install 5 fixings (112). Torque: 2.6Nm

CAUTION
  • This step is only applicable to Defender X vehicles.

Using a suitable tool, cut off the clips on both H-panels as illustrated along the dashed lines. And install these to the front bumper in the next step with the original fixings removed it 'Step 6'.

Assemble and install the modified front bumper.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-19 Bumpers / Front Bumper - Core Vehicle'.

Install parts to winch cover (1).

  1. Install the 2 black parking aid sensors (1) from kit 'LR137889' to the parking aid sensor brackets.
  2. Install the 2 towing eye cover retaining clips (205).

Install parts to winch cover (1).

  • Install the 2 small clips (209). Note the correct orientation of the cover securing clips.

  • The following 'Steps 68 to 72' is only applicable to vehicles with front proximity camera.

Install the camera mount (1). Stage 1 of 5

  • Apply tape in the area shown to protect the grille section when cutting part (1) in next step.

  • This step is only applicable to vehicles with front proximity camera.

Install the camera mount (1). Stage 2 of 5

  • Cut out the indented illustrated areas visible on the inside of the winch cover.

  • This step is only applicable to vehicles with front proximity camera.

Install the camera mount (1). Stage 3 of 5

  1. Cut 8mm from the camera mount tabs. Install the mount onto the winch cover through the cutouts, making sure it is pushed fully forward.

Install the camera mount (1). Stage 4 of 5

  • Mark and drill 2 holes in the winch cover using a 1mm drill bit, using the camera mount as a guide.

Install the camera mount (1). Stage 5 of 5

  • Install 2 fixings (300). Torque: 2.6Nm

Locate connectors.

  1. Locate the 2 parking-aid sensor electrical connectors.
  2. If installed, locate the front proximity camera electrical connector and feed it though the drilled hole on the modified radiator grille .

Install the winch bar (2).

  1. Slot the winch bar into the mounting cradle.
  2. Install the winch bar to the mounting cradle with 2 fixings (202), (203) and (206). Torque: 24Nm

CAUTION
  • Handle the camera with care and avoid touching the lens.
NOTE
  • This step requires the aid of another technician to hold the winch cover near the front of the vehicle.
  • This step applies only to vehicles equipped with a front proximity camera.

Install the front proximity camera.

  1. Position the winch cover near the front of the vehicle and feed the proximity camera connector through the grille on the winch cover and connect it to the front proximity camera.
  2. Install the front proximity camera into the camera housing (2). Note the orientation of the camera.
  3. Install the camera and housing onto the previously installed camera mount. Fasten the camera housing to the camera mount using fixing (300).

NOTE
  • This step requires the aid of another technician to hold the winch cover near the front of the vehicle.

Connect both front parking-aid sensors.

  • Connect the parking-aid sensor harness to the parking-aid sensor. An audible 'click' will be heard when they are correctly installed.

Install the winch cover (1). Stage 1 of 2

  1. Engage the 2 upper retaining clips. An audible 'click' will be heard when they are correctly installed.
  2. Install the 2 lower fixings (208). Torque: 6Nm

Install the winch cover (1). Stage 2 of 2

  1. Lift the edge of the winch cover to reveal the 5 adhesive strips attached to the winch bar underneath. Clean the surface of the winch cover where it will contact the adhesive strips.
  2. Peel the backing off the 5 adhesive strips and allow the winch cover to return to its natural position. Push down on the surface of the winch cover for 15 seconds to give a strong adhesive bond.

Install the winch cover (3).

  • Using the 2 location studs at the top of the winch cover, slot into position and install with 2 fixings (204).

If removed from front bumper, install the license plate plinth and license plate to the winch cover (3). Stage 1 of 2

  • Remove the location pins from the license plate plinth as illustrated.

  • Remove the winch cover (3) if required to aid installation.

Install the license plate plinth to the winch cover (3). Stage 2 of 2

  1. Position the license plate plinth centrally against the winch cover.
  2. Using the license plate plinth as a guide, mark the fixing point locations on the winch cover, then remove the plinth.
  3. Drill 5 holes in the winch cover at the marked locations using a 6 mm drill bit.
  4. Install the license plate plinth to the winch cover using fixings (201) and (203). Torque: 2.6Nm
  5. Install the license plate onto the license plate plinth.

Connect the 12V battery.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '414-00 Battery and Charging System - General Information / 12V System Disconnect and Connect'.

  • Action 1 must be successfully completed before proceeding to Action 2.

Use the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic (TOPIx Icloud) to navigate to diagnostic section and follow the steps below.

  1. Within Vehicle Applications – Click ‘RUN’ for ‘Winch’, then select ADD.
  2. Within Module Programing – Click ‘RUN’ for ‘Winch' - Software’.
  3. To enable the changes on the vehicle
    Ignition off
    Close all doors
    Lock the vehicle
    Wait 5 minutes
    To confirm changes
    Unlock the vehicle
    Remove any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) if present

After completing the winch installation, verify and test that all vehicle systems interacted with during the installation are functioning correctly.
