WARNING
  • Make sure to wear suitable personal protective equipment when cutting / drilling parts.
CAUTION
  • Installing side steps will affect the off-road capability of the vehicle.
  • When discarding parts do so in an environmentally responsible manner making sure all local laws are adhered to.
NOTE
  • If you are installing 'Mud Flaps' with the 'Side Steps' then they must be installed after the 'Side Steps' are installed.
  • This procedure contains illustrations for left side components, right side components are similar.

Pre-installation check.

  • Make sure that the deployable side steps RBM are installed under the loadspace floor before proceeding. If not, refer to accessory instructions 'Deployable Side Steps (Electrical Only)' to install first.

Open all doors and raise and support the vehicle.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '100-02 Jacking and Lifting'.

  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

If installed to your vehicle, partially remove the front mud flap.

  1. Remove front wheel. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '204-04 Wheel and Tires / Wheel and Tire'.
  2. Remove mud flap fixings for access to the front wheel arch liner fixings later.

Remove the transmission undershield.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section 501-02 Front End Body Panels / Transmission Undershield'.

Remove the jacking point cover.

  1. Remove clip (white arrow).
  2. Remove fixing.

Remove the rear air deflector.

  • Remove x2 fixings and remove the rear air deflector.

Remove the rear-left and right undershields.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section 501-02 Front End Body Panels / Left Undershield'.
  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section 501-02 Front End Body Panels / Right Undershield'.

Remove the rear rocker panel moulding.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08: Exterior Trim and Ornamentation / Rear Rocker Panel Moulding'.

Remove the front rocker moulding.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08: Exterior Trim and Ornamentation / Front Rocker Panel Moulding'.

  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Depending on vehicle variant, you may be required to remove any fixings or front mounting brackets in the area under the removed jacking point cover.

  • Variant 1 = Remove x6 fixings and mounting bracket.
  • Variant 2 = Remove x3 fixings and mounting bracket.
  • Variant 3 = Remove x2 fixings.

Removing the body harness blanking plug.

  1. Locate and unclip the body harness blanking plug from underneath the vehicle, located near the rear wheel.
  2. Remove the blanking plug from the connector.

  • Guide line is not exactly the same as the cut line where arrowed.

Modify the jacking point cover.

  1. Identify the cut guide line. Paint over the cut guide lines to make the cut guide lines clearer.
  2. Use a suitable tool to measure and cut the illustrated section.
  3. Discard the removed blue section.

Modify the transmission undershield.

  1. Identify both cut guide lines. Paint over the cut guide lines to make them clearer if required.
  2. Use a suitable tool to cut the illustrated sections and discard the removed blue sections.

  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Modify the rear undershield depending on your variant of vehicle.

  1. Using the existing cut guide line on the undershield as a guide. Measure and mark the remaining cut line as illustrated. Paint over the cut guide lines to make them clearer if required.
  2. Use a suitable tool to cut the illustrated section and discard the removed blue section.

Identify which 'Jacking Point' is required for each side of the vehicle, as there may be two different types (left or right side).

Jacking point installation check.

  1. The jacking point cutouts must align with the Self Piercing Rivet (SPR) on the body (arrowed).
  2. Inspect each jacking point to make sure it sits flush against the vehicle body floor panel and sill flange.
  3. Verify correct installation at all four corners.

Installing front jacking point (A).

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten the vertical fixing (A1) first.
  2. Install, but do not fully tighten the remaining x2 fixings (A1).

Installing the front jacking point (A) fully.

  1. Fully tighten the vertical fixing (A1) first. Torque: 24Nm
  2. Fully tighten the remaining x2 fixings (A1). Torque: 24Nm

Installing jacking point (B) and the rear bracket (C).

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten the vertical fixing (A1) first.
  2. Install, but do not fully tighten the remaining x2 fixings (A1).

Installing the front jacking point (B) fully.

  1. Fully tighten the vertical fixing (A1) first. Torque: 24Nm
  2. Fully tighten the remaining x2 fixings (A1). Torque: 24Nm

Install the front rocker panel moulding, replacing any broken clips with clips (A3).

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08: Exterior Trim and Ornamentation / Front Rocker Panel Moulding'.

Install the rear rocker panel moulding, replacing any broken clips with clips (A2) and (A3).

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '501-08: Exterior Trim and Ornamentation / Rear Rocker Panel Moulding'.

Before installation scan QR code on motor link (E).

  • When scanned, If the date code on the motor link is before date code “220225” (for example 25/02/22) then the torque of the fixing in step 49 must be checked. (This will be completed when you get to step 49).
  • If the date code on the motor link is after “220225” then step 49 will not be required.

Install the front deployable side step brackets (D). Observe the location identifier 'L/F' (left side front) or 'R/F' (right side front) on the brackets.

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten x2 fixings (D1).
  2. Install, but do not fully tighten fixing (D2).
  3. To achieve an accurate installation, measure the bracket to body gap with a feeler gauge. A 2mm gap must be achieved around each fixing.

  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the rear deployable side step motor bracket (E). Observe the location identifier 'L/R' (left side rear) or 'R/R' (right side rear) on the brackets.

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten x2 fixings (D1).
  2. To achieve an accurate installation, measure the bracket to body gap with a feeler gauge. A 2mm gap must be achieved around each fixing.

Connect the deployable side step motor.

  1. Connect body harness connector from 'Step 11' to the motor connector.
  2. Pull the connector to make sure there is no loose connection.

Lower the vehicle.

Inspect that the deployable side steps are working correctly.

  • Make sure 'Roof Access' mode is selected using the vehicle's PIVI screen to deploy the deployable side step brackets.

Raise the Vehicle.

Continue to install the rear deployable side step motor bracket (E).

  1. Install, but do not fully tighten fixing (D1).
  2. To achieve an accurate installation, measure the bracket to body gap with a feeler gauge. A 2mm gap must be achieved around each fixing.

Fasten harness clip.

  • Clip the deployable side step motor harness to the rear jacking point bracket (C).

Gap inspection.

  • Prior to installing the side (F), inspect that there is an even gap between the metal finisher and the rubber step part on the side step. Gap must be no more than 1.75mm for the top gap.

Install the side step (F).

  1. Make sure the T-nut on the step (green part in illustration), is aligned with the holes in the front and rear brackets using a suitable guide tool.
  2. Install, but do not fully tighten x2 fixings (F1) to install the side step onto the front bracket.
  3. Install, but do not fully tighten x2 fixings (F1) to install the side step onto the rear bracket.

Position the side step.

  • Slide the side step into position, making sure that a gap of 12mm from the side step to the front bracket is present.

  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Inspect side step and bracket position before final tightening of fixings.

  • Make sure the contact faces of the side step bracket and step are flush with each other. If the step and bracket are not flush then the holes will not correctly line up and there will be a risk of cross-threading the fixings.

Tighten all bracket to side step fixings.

  • Fully tighten x4 side step fixings (F1). Mark fixings when the recommended torque has been achieved. Torque: 10Nm

Lower the vehicle and connect an approved battery support unit to stop the vehicles 12V battery from going flat.

CAUTION
  • This is a critical step to make sure the DSS brackets are aligned to the body. A Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) “Obstruction Error” may show if actions are not followed.
NOTE
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Test that the deployable side steps are working correctly.

  1. Connect an approved battery support unit to stop the vehicles 12V battery from going flat.
  2. Turn off 'Deployable Side Step' from the PIVI screen (both side steps will stow).
  3. Turn on 'Deployable Side Step' from PIVI screen and select 'Roof access mode' (both side steps will deploy).

Raise the vehicle.

CAUTION
  • Tightening of fixing sequence must be followed. A DTC 'Obstruction Error' may show if sequence is not followed.
NOTE
  • Both 'Deployable' and 'Fixed Side Steps' shown in graphic. Tightening sequence is the same.
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Fully tighten the side step bracket fixings in the sequence shown.

  • 1-5: M10 Torque: 60Nm
  • 6: M12 Torque: 70Nm

  • Perform this action on all four brackets.

Using the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) service lube (or equivalent lithium grease spray), spray the highlighted areas on both sides of the bracket to avoid unwanted noise when in operation.

Install the modified rear-left and right undershields.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section 501-02 Front End Body Panels / Left Undershield'.
  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section 501-02 Front End Body Panels / Right Undershield'.

Install the rear air deflector.

  • Install x2 fixings to install the rear air deflector. Torque: 5Nm

Install the modified jacking point cover.

  1. Install clip (white arrow).
  2. Install fixing. Torque: 5Nm

Install the modified transmission undershield.

  • Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section 501-02 Front End Body Panels / Transmission Undershield'.

Install front mud flap if originally removed.

  1. Install mud flap original fixings. Torque: 6Nm
  2. Install front wheel. Log into TOPIX and enter your 17 character 'Vehicle Identification Number' and navigate to 'Workshop Manual' section '204-04 Wheel and Tires / Wheel and Tire'.

Lower the vehicle and close all doors.

NOTE
  • This step is 'ONLY' applicable if the date on the QR scan in installation step 23 is before date code “220225” (for example 25/02/22).
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the vehicle.

Partially deploy the side steps (midway) and tightening fixing.

  1. Remove the access panel to the rear junction box and locate R1F27 30 Amp fuse.
  2. With the assistance of a second person retract the side steps by selecting the 'Roof access mode', at this point the fuse needs to be removed.
  3. When timed correctly this will stop and hold the deployable side steps in the (midway) position for tightening the fixing. Torque: 24Nm
  4. Install the fuse and clear all DTC.

  • This is a critical step to make sure the DSS brackets are aligned to the body. A DTC “Obstruction Error” may show if actions are not followed.

Final testing of the deployable side steps.

  1. Turn off 'Deployable Side Steps' on the PIVI screen (side steps will stow).
  2. Turn on 'Deployable Side Step' on the PIVI screen and select 'Roof access mode' (side steps will deploy).
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 a minimum of 6 times. When complete leave the side steps deployed before preceding to the next step.
  4. Disconnect the approved battery support unit for the 12V battery.

With the engine running connect the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) to the vehicle to check if any DTC are present on the RBM. If DTC are present follow TOPIX workflow for DSS to fault find and clear the codes.

  • Using the PIVI screen deactivate roof access mode.

Make sure the deployable side steps are operating correctly and are activated for the customer handover.
