CAUTION
  • Make sure to wear suitable personal protective equipment.
  • When discarding parts do so in an environmentally responsible manner making sure all local laws are adhered to.
NOTE
  • If you are installing mudflaps with the 'Deployable Side Steps' then they should be installed after the 'Deployable Side Steps' are installed.
  • This procedure contains illustrations for left side components, right side components are similar.
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • If you have mudflaps installed then the front wheels need to be removed during the procedure for access.

Make sure that the Running Board Control Module (RBM) and bracket are installed to the vehicle, using the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment to add 'Deployable Side Steps' to the vehicle.

CAUTION
  • If using a 2 pillar lift make sure to use the front and rear subframe jacking points. Do not use the sill jacking points.
NOTE
  • If using a 2 pillar lift make sure the ramp legs are positioned so they do not obstruct the fixed side step or side tube installation location.

Open all doors and raise and support the vehicle on a 4 pillar lift.

  • Front wheel is removed for access to fixing (X1) behind wheel arch liner.

Partially remove both front mudflaps. Remaining wheel arch liner fixings should be removed for access to (X1) fixing. Refer to instructions For additional information, please refer to the official Workshop Manual. Front Mudflaps (102-03 Exterior)

  1. Remove mudflap fixings (X).
  2. Partially move the mudflap and remove wheel arch liner fixing.

Remove the rear air deflectors on both sides of the vehicle.

Remove the rear rocker panel moulding on both sides of the vehicle, and remove any broken clips still in the trim housing. Replace any broken 'Lantern Clips' (LR112137) and 'Trim Clips' (LR032984).

Remove the front rocker moulding on both sides of the vehicle, and replace any broken 'Lantern Clips' (LR112137).

Remove both harness blanking plugs from under the vehicle on both sides.

Identify which 'Jacking Point' is required for each side of the vehicle.

CAUTION
  • The jacking point cutouts should align with the Self Piercing Rivet (SPR) on the body.

Inspect the installation of each jacking point against the vehicle body before installing. At each corner the jacking point should sit flush against the floor panel and sill flange.

Install the front jacking point (A) to both sides of the vehicle. Install, but do not fully tighten the x3 fixings (A1).

Fully tighten x3 fixings (A1) on both sides of the vehicle. Mark fixings when the recommended torque has been achieved.

  • Torque: 24Nm

  • For PHEV vehicles, discard the current rear jacking points and install with the correct jacking points from the accessory kit.
  • Install the vertical fixing first.

Install the rear bracket (C) and jacking point (B) to both sides of the vehicle. Install, but do not fully tighten the x3 fixings (A1).

Install both modified jacking point covers. If present, install the front mudflap fixings removed in step 3.

  • Torque: 5Nm

Before installation scan QR code on both left and right motor links (E).

  • When scanned, If the date code on the motor link is before date code “220225” (for example 25/02/22) then the torque of the fixing in step 67 will need to be checked. (This will be completed when you get to step 67).
  • If the date code on the motor link is after “220225” then step 67 will not need to be performed later.

CAUTION
  • Make sure the brackets are installed at the correct location on the vehicle. Observe the location identifier (L/F) or (R/F) on the brackets.

Install the front deployable side step brackets (D) to both sides of the vehicle. Install, but do not fully tighten x2 fixings (D1) and x1 fixing (D2).

  • To achieve an accurate instal, measure the bracket to body gap with a feeler gauge. A 2mm gap should be achieved around each fixing.

CAUTION
  • Make sure the brackets are installed at the correct location on the vehicle. Observe the location identifier (L/R) or (R/R) on the brackets.
NOTE
  • The inboard fixing is installed in later steps.

Install the rear deployable side step brackets (E) to both sides of the vehicle. Install, but do not fully tighten the x2 fixings (D1)

To achieve an accurate instal, measure the bracket to body gap with a feeler gauge. A 2mm gap should be achieved around each fixing.

  • Pull the connectors to make sure there is a secure connection.

Connect both harness connectors from step 32 to the motor connectors on both deployable side step brackets (E).

Lower the vehicle.

CAUTION
  • Make sure 'Roof Access' mode is selected.

Deploy the deployable side steps using the vehicles PIVI screen.

Raise the Vehicle.

  • Install, but do not fully tighten the fixing.

Install the rear deployable side step bracket inboard fixing (D1) on both sides of the vehicle.

Install the deployable side step motor harness clip to the rear jacking point bracket (C).

NOTE
  • Gap should be no more than 1.75~mm for the top gap.

Before installing the side steps (F) inspect gap between the metal finisher and rubber step part.

NOTE
  • Before inserting the bolts make sure the T-nut on the step is aligned with the holes in the bracket using a suitable guide tool.
  • Fixings hand tight at this stage.
  • When in place, slide the side steps on the T-fixings to the furthest most rearward position.

Install the side steps (F) onto the front bracket with fixings (F1).

  1. Install the front of the board on the front bracket.
  2. Install the rear of the board on the rear bracket.

  • Image shows front LH bracket and step in correct position.

Make sure the side step is pushed to the furthest most rearward position.

CAUTION
  • If the step and bracket are not flush then the holes will not correctly line up and there will be a risk of cross-threading the fixings.

Make sure the contact faces of the bracket and step are flush with each other.

Fully tighten x4 side step fixings. Mark fixings when the recommended torque has been achieved.

  • Torque: 10Nm

Lower the vehicle.

Connect an approved battery support unit.

CAUTION
  • This is a critical step to make sure the DSS brackets are aligned to the body. A Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) “Obstruction Error” may show if actions are not followed.
  • Make sure 'Roof Access' mode is selected.

Stow and then deploy the deployable side steps using the vehicles PIVI screen. Follow the sequence below:

  1. Turn off 'Deployable Side Step' from the PIVI screen (both side steps will stow)
  2. Turn on 'Deployable Side Step' from PIVI screen and select Roof access mode (both side steps will deploy)
  3. Make sure the roof access mode is selected before proceeding to the next step.

Raise the vehicle.

  • Tightening of fixing sequence must be followed. A DTC 'Obstruction Error' may show if sequence is not followed.
NOTE
  • Both 'Deployable' and 'Fixed Side Steps' shown in graphic. Tightening sequence is the same.

Fully tighten the side step bracket fixings in the sequence shown.

  • 1-5: M10 Torque: 60Nm
  • 6: M12 Torque: 70Nm

Install the rear air deflectors on both sides of the vehicle.

  • Torque: 5Nm

Lower the vehicle and close all doors.

  • This step is 'ONLY' applicable if the date on the QR scan in installation step 42 is before date code “220225” (for example 25/02/22).

Partially deploy the side steps (midway), then inspect and tighten fixing on both rear-left and right deployable side step brackets.

  1. Remove the access panel to the rear junction box.
  2. Locate R1F27 30 Amp fuse.
  3. With the assistance of a second person retract the side steps by selecting the “Roof access mode”, at this point the fuse needs to be removed.
  4. When timed correctly this will stop and hold the deployable side steps in the (midway) position for tightening the fixing.
  5. Torque fixing highlighted to 24Nm, install the fuse, clear all DTC’s and inspect that the deployable side steps are functioning correctly.

CAUTION
  • This is a critical step to make sure the DSS brackets are aligned to the body. A DTC “Obstruction Error” may show if actions are not followed.
  • Make sure 'Roof Access' mode is selected.

Stow and then deploy the deployable side steps using the vehicles PIVI screen a minimum of 6 times. Follow the sequence below:

  1. Turn off 'Deployable Side Step' from the PIVI screen (both side steps will stow)
  2. Turn on 'Deployable Side Step' from PIVI screen and select Roof access mode (both side steps will deploy)
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 a minimum of 6 times.
  4. Make sure the roof access mode is selected before proceeding to the next step.

With the engine running connect the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) to the vehicle to check if any DTC are present on the RBM. If DTCs are present follow TOPIX workflow for DSS to fault find and clear the codes.

  • Using the PIVI screen deactivate roof access mode.

Make sure the deployable side steps are operating correctly and are activated for the customer handover.
