FITTING INSTRUCTION

  • Accessories which are not correctly installed can be dangerous. Read the instructions carefully prior to ordering and installation to make sure this accessory is applicable to your variant of vehicle. Comply with instructions at all times. If in doubt, contact your nearest approved retailer.

NOTE
  • Item (T) VPLYT0340 is only required if your vehicle 'HAS' a towbar already installed.
  • Item (R) VPLYT0338 is only required if your vehicle does 'NOT' have a towbar already installed.
  • Item (S) in kit (VPLYP0520) is only used if your vehicle does 'NOT' have a towbar already installed.
  • Item (C2) in kit (VPLYP0520) is only used if your vehicle 'HAS' air suspension.

Warnings / Cautions / Notes

CAUTION
  • This accessory is not applicable for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) vehicles.
  • If you are also installing a towbar to the vehicle in conjunction with deployable side steps. Then the towbar must be installed first.
REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
1

Remove parts in this order.

  1. Remove parcel shelf.
  2. Remove loadspace D loops.
  3. Remove loadspace floor.

Remove parts in this order.

  1. Remove spare wheel (If one is present).
  2. Remove tool foam tray.
3

Remove loadspace scuff plate trim panel.

NOTE
  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle if a towbar is 'NOT' installed to vehicle.

Remove C-pillar and D-pillar upper trims.

  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle if a towbar is 'NOT' installed to vehicle.

Partially remove loadspace side trim panel by removing x4 clips for access.

Disconnect 12V start up battery and remove battery bracket.

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal connector from the 12V start up battery. For additional information, please refer to the official Workshop Manual. Startup Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-00)
  2. Remove battery bracket x3 fixings.
  3. Remove rubber foam.

Remove the blanking grommet which is positioned in the spare wheel well in front of the 12V battery.

Raise vehicle on 4 post ramp.

  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle.

Open vehicle doors and remove rocker panel moulding.

Remove the centre undershield.

Remove both side undershields.

  • Before working on the fuel system make sure to study the fuel system health and safety section of this manual.
NOTE
  • This step only applies to vehicles with a fuel cooler equipped.

Remove fixings and support fuel cooler to allow access.

Following the guide markings, cut the side undershield as shown.

Following the guide markings, cut the side undershield as shown.

Modify the left cover (G) as shown.

Modify the left cover (H) as shown.

Installing shields (G) and (H).

  1. Remove and discard the existing u-nut clip on the side undershield and install fixing (I) to attach each shield to the side undershield.
  2. Make sure that the cover is evenly aligned against the side undershield for the next step.

CAUTION
  • Make sure that the cover is evenly aligned against the side undershield shown in previous step before you drill.
NOTE
  • Left side shown. Also repeat this step on right side of vehicle.

Using a 6 mm drill, drill a total of x3 holes into the side undershield where illustrated.

Using rivets (J) and washers (K), secure the shield to the side undershield.

Remove screw (I). This will be installed again later in the procedure.

Before installing the deployable side step brackets make sure the front battery cable clips are pushed up as far as possible on the location studs. This will aid the installation of the deployable side step harness when it will be installed.

  • Do not torque the bolts at this step.

Thread forming for front brackets.

  1. Install x2 bolts (B) into front brackets (C) and (E), make sure they are aligned and create thread.
  2. Then remove x2 bolts (B).

  • Do not torque the bolts at this step.

Thread forming for rear brackets.

  1. Install x2 bolts (B) into rear brackets (D) and (F), make sure they are aligned and create thread.
  2. Then remove x2 bolts (B).

  • Do not torque the bolts at this step.

Thread forming front fixing points.

  1. Install x2 bolts (B) into the illustrated positions, make sure they are aligned and create thread.
  2. Then remove x2 bolts (B).

  • This step is to aid installation.

Make note of bracket positions to aid installation.

  • Only hand tighten at this stage.
NOTE
  • Left side shown. Also repeat this step on right side of vehicle.

Install front brackets (C) and (E) to the vehicle using the reinforcing plate (W) and x2 bolts (B).

  • Only hand tighten at this stage.
NOTE
  • Left side shown. Also repeat this step on right side of vehicle.

Install x2 bolts (B) to front brackets (C) and (E) from the inside.

Fully tighten all bolts (B) on the front brackets (C) and (E).

  • Torque: 30Nm

Install x2 bolts (B) to rear brackets (D) and (F).

  • Only hand tighten at this stage.
NOTE

Install rear brackets (D) and (F) to the vehicle using the reinforcing plate (W) and bolts (B).

CAUTION
  • Make sure you tighten the vertical bolts in step 17 first then tighten ones in step 18.

Fully tighten all bolts (B) on the rear brackets (D) and (F).

  • Torque: 30Nm

NOTE
  • This is located near the rear right deployable side step bracket (F) on the vehicle.

Install supplied protection cover (L) on the battery cable in the illustrated position.

NOTE
  • This step only applies to vehicles equipped with Fuel Fired Booster Heater (FFBH) .
  • This is located near the front left deployable side step bracket (C) on the vehicle.

Install supplied protection cover (Q) to the fuel line in the illustrated position.

  • The illustrated wiring harness routing and connectors is to aid installation.
  • Dotted lines represent harness hidden behind components. Solid lines show parts of the harness at are visible from underneath the vehicle.
  • Harness (S) is only required if you do not have a towbar already installed to the vehicle.

Install deployable side step harnesses.

  1. Harness (M):= Make sure the longer section of the wiring harness (M) is installed on the right side of the vehicle as illustrated. The harness from connectors (MB) and (MC) to (MA) are routed underneath the vehicle. The harness from (MA) to (MD) is to be routed inside the vehicle in the loadspace.
  2. Harness (S):= Wiring harness (S) is be routed inside the vehicle in the loadspace.

  • This illustration is showing certain components removed such as the rear subframe to provide extra clarity of the routing of the harness.

Feed the wiring harness (M) through into the spare wheel well and secure the grommet (MA). Secure the harness to vehicle body where arrowed.

  1. For vehicles with air suspension secure to the air pipe using the clip (C2) as shown in bottom inset item 1.
  2. For vehicles with coil suspension secure to body stud as shown in bottom inset item 2.

Route and secure the wiring harness (M) as illustrated. Secure the harness to vehicle body where arrowed.

  1. Use cable ties (C1) where shown to secure harness.

Reattach fuel cooler with fixings and inspect for leaks. Clip deployable side step harness (M) located where the solid black arrow is.

Lower vehicle.

Continue to feed the deployable side step wiring harness (M) into the spare wheel well and secure where arrowed.

  1. Use cable tie (C1) where shown to secure harness.
  2. Use clip (C3) on Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) vehicles only to secure harness.

NOTE
  • The steps 30 to 33 only applies to vehicles installed 'WITH' a towbar already installed. If you vehicle does 'NOT' have a towbar proceed to step 34.

Pull back left side trim panel to reveal area shown. If your vehicle already has a Trailer Module (TRM) or a Tow Bar Control Module (TBM) installed as shown then proceed to steps 30 to 33.

Place the Running Board Control Module (RBM) carrier (T) onto the existing towbar module carrier.

Place RBM (N) to module holder (T).

  • This step only applies to vehicle installed 'WITH' a towbar module already installed.

Attach towbar harness to RBM.

  1. Remove towbar connector from location shown.
  2. Connect towbar connector to the RBM.

Secure harness (M) with x3 tie straps (C1) and connect connector (MD) to the RBM.

  • The steps 34 to 43 only applies to vehicles 'NOT' installed with a towbar. If you vehicle 'DOES' have a towbar proceed to step 44.

Pull back left side trim panel to reveal area shown. Install module holder (R).

  • This step only applies to vehicles without a towbar installed.

Install RBM (N) to module holder.

  • This step only applies to vehicle 'WITHOUT' a towbar installed.

Connect connector (MD) to the RBM.

  • This step only applies to vehicle 'WITHOUT' a towbar installed.

Connect the deployable side step link harness (S).

  1. Connect the deployable side step link harness (S) to RBM with connector (SA)
  2. Run the link harness (S) along the same path as harness (M) and connect connector (SB). If a connector is already in this position, then remove and connect (SB) connector.
  3. Connect link harness earth connection (SC) to vehicle body. Torque: 10.5Nm +/-1.6Nm
  4. Use x3 cable ties (C1) where shown to secure both harness (S) and (M) to the main body harness.

  • This step only applies to vehicle 'WITHOUT' a towbar installed.

Route and secure the link lead (S) as illustrated using x4 cable ties (C1). Then feed link harness (S) under main harness cover clips where arrowed.

Pull back right side trim panel and install towing harness (C).

  1. Remove body harness stud clips x2 from right side of loadspace .
  2. Route and secure towing harness (S) as illustrated.
  3. Install body harness back to the x2 studs.

  • This step only applies to vehicle 'WITHOUT' a towbar installed.

Cut cable tie and release junction box from bottom clips.

NOTE

Install the link lead harness (S) to the back of the rear junction box with connector pin (SD).

  1. Remove connector C4BR02R from the rear junction box at position 'C15'.
  2. Remove the PVC protection tube from the end of connector pin (SD) on harness (S).
  3. Insert blue/red wire into cavity 4 in connector.
  4. Connect connector back into the rear junction box in position 'C15'.

  • This step only applies to vehicle 'WITHOUT' a towbar installed.

Reconnect rear junction box by the lower clips (a clicking sound will alert you it is securely in place), and then cable tie (C1).

Connect 30A fuse.

  1. Fuse (C6) = F69.

Connect 12V start up battery and install battery bracket.

  1. Install rubber foam.
  2. Install battery bracket x3 fixings.
  3. Connect negative battery terminal connector from the 12V start up battery. For additional information, please refer to the official Workshop Manual. Startup Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-00)

NOTE
  • Make sure step 1 is successfully completed before proceeding to step 2.

Use the JLR approved diagnostic equipment to navigate to 'Diagnostics' section and follow the steps below.

  1. Within Vehicle Applications – Click ‘RUN’ for ‘Add/Remove Deployable Side Steps’, then choose ADD.
  2. Within Module Programing – Click ‘RUN’ for ‘RBM - Software - Replace Module’.
  3. To enable the changes on the vehicle
    Ignition off
    Close all doors
    Lock the vehicle
    Wait 5 minutes
    To confirm changes
    Unlock the vehicle
    Reset Infotainment Screen (Refer to 'Touchscreen' settings in Owners handbook for detailed procedure.)
    Confirm 'Side - Step' tile is present on the Touchscreen

Install fixing clips to secure left loadspace side trim panel .

Install C-pillar and D-pillar upper trims.

Install loadspace scuff plate trim panel.

Install parts in this order.

  1. Install spare wheel (If one is present).
  2. Install tool foam tray.

Install parts in this order.

  1. Install loadspace floor.
  2. Install loadspace D-loops. Torque: 24Nm
  3. Install parcel shelf.

Raise the vehicle.

  • Do not install the fixings arrowed.

Install both side undershields.

  • Torque: 7Nm

Install centre undershield.

  • Torque: 5Nm

  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle.

Open vehicle doors and install rocker panel moulding.

  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle.
  • Removal of front wheels maybe required if access is obscured.

Identify the location of the fixing hole for the deployable side step shield (G) behind the front wheel arch liner. Drill one hole in the front wheel arch liners using a 5 mm drill.

  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle.

Install x2 screws (I) to secure the deployable side step shield. Then install front wheels if required.

  • Torque: 7Nm

  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle.

When you install the side steps (A). Make sure you correctly position in relation to the front bracket measurement as illustrated.

  • Only hand tighten at this stage.
NOTE
  • Repeat this step on right side of the vehicle.

Secure the deployable side step (A) to the mounting brackets using x4 fixings (P).

Fully tighten x4 fixings (P).

  • Torque: 12 Nm

Lower vehicle, and test function of the deployable side steps.
